Puppy Vaccination Recommendations
The first year of your puppy's life is the most important.  Preventive health care, suth as regular veterinary examinations and vaccinations, can help add to the quality and length of your puppy's life.  The correct vaccination schedule will help protect oyr puppy form potentially life threatening diseases such as the parvo virus and canine distemper.
We recommend the following vaccination schedule:
6 weeks of age                        Distemper          Parainfluenza
                                              Hepatitis            Parvo Virus
9 weeks of age                        Distemper          Parainfluenza
                                              Hepatitis            Parvo Virus
                                              Leptospirosis
12 weeks of age                      Distemper          Parainfluenza
                                              Hepatitis            Parvo Virus
                                              Leptospirosis
16 weeks of age                      Distemper          Parainfluenza
                                              Hepatitis            Parvo Virus
                                              Rabies
Leptospirosis:  Given to dogs that live on ranches, are around standing pools of water, are hunting dogs or go camping and hiking. This is a two dose series that can be given starting at 9 & 12 weeks of age. Due to increased frequency of occurance we are recommending this vaccine for all dogs.
*

Lymes:  Given to dogs that go hunting, camping, hiking, or live in a wooded area where ticks can be a problem.  This is a two dose series that can be given starting at 9 & 12 weeks of age.

It is important to remember that your puppy is not totally protected for these diseases until 2 - 3 weeks after the last vaccination.  Puppies should be kept away from any areas that may be frequented by other dogs, such as parks and boarding facilities until they are 18 - 19 weeks of age

Routine fecal examinations are important for your pupp's overall health.  Please ask our staff if you have any questions.  The CDC recommends the following deworming schedule for your puppy.

Every 2 weeks until 3 months of age
Once a month from 3 - 6 months of age
Four times a year after 6 months of age

*Some breeds (ie: doberman, Golden Retriever, Rottweiller, etc) may need added vaccinations.

Here at Sutherlin Vet we believe that an annual exam is as, if not more, important than the actual vaccination of your pet.  Vaccines are a great preventitive for certain viruses and it is important to keep them up to date.  However, we often find other things going on with your pet's health during a routine examination.  The age of your pet and the lifestyle you lead will help to determine what your pet will require.  Below you will find what we recommend as far as exams, vaccinations, deworming, etc...
